Ingredients

Canned cut green beans
  • 4 can (14.5 oz) cut green beans drained
Bacon
  • 8 slices bacon chopped
Onion
  • 0.5 small onion diced
Brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar packed
Butter
  • 0.25 cup butter melted
Soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
Black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper

Equipment

  • 1 cast iron skillet

Method

Prep and sauce base
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F.
  2. Cook the chopped bacon and diced onion in a skillet for 8 minutes until the bacon is mostly crisp, and do not drain the drippings.
  3. Place the drained canned cut green beans in a 9x13-inch baking dish and top with the bacon, onion, and drippings.
  4. Whisk together the packed brown sugar, melted butter, soy sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper until smooth, then pour the mixture over the beans.
Bake and finish
  1. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 350F for 35-40 minutes.
  2. Stir once during baking (around the midpoint) to redistribute the bacon and onion, until the sauce looks glossy and coats the beans.
  3. Stir and serve warm.

Notes

Pro tip: Keep the bacon drippings in the skillet—those juices are what help the brown sugar butter sauce turn glossy instead of greasy. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days; reheat in the oven or microwave until hot. Freezing is not recommended because the green beans can soften too much after thawing. For a lower-sodium option, use low-sodium soy sauce while keeping the garlic powder and pepper the same for balance.
