Ingredients

Dry mix
  • 1.5 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
Butter crumble
  • 0.75 cup unsalted butter cold, cubed
  • 0.5 cup chopped nuts optional
  • 0.25 cup shredded coconut optional

Method

Make the crumble base
  1. Combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Add chopped nuts and/or shredded coconut if using, then toss to evenly distribute.
Form chunky clumps
  1. Add cold cubed butter to the bowl and work it in with your fingertips, two forks, or a pastry cutter until large chunky clumps form; leave some pea-sized butter pieces.
Use now or store
  1. Use the topping immediately over your prepared fruit filling, or refrigerate in an airtight container up to 5 days, or freeze up to 3 months.
  2. Bake with the fruit filling at 375°F for 35-45 minutes, until the topping is deeply golden.

Notes

For the crispiest texture, keep the butter cold and avoid overmixing—chunky clumps bake up better than a uniform sandy crumble. Refrigerate topping (covered) up to 5 days; freeze up to 3 months. To make it dairy-free, use a 1:1 cold cubed vegan butter substitute and proceed the same way.
